What to expect

The road test has two main parts.

The exam is designed to assess practical driving skill, safe vehicle control, and readiness for independent driving.

Bring the right documents and vehicle

Arrive with valid, legible documents and a roadworthy vehicle with current registration and proof of insurance.

Complete parking maneuvers

The parking portion includes forward stop line, backing into a parking spot, and parallel parking.

Complete the road test

The examiner evaluates real-world driving, traffic law compliance, safe decision-making, and proper driving technique.

Drivers are responsible for bringing required documents and a safe, properly equipped vehicle for testing.

Driver Requirements

  • Bring all required documents on test day.
  • Documents must be valid, legible, and unaltered.
  • Driver must be ticket-free and accident-at-fault-free for at least 90 days before testing.
  • Drivers under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
  • Teen drivers need a Level 1 license and Segment 2 certificate.
  • Teen drivers must complete Segments 1 and 2, log 50 driving hours including 10 at night, and hold a Level 1 license for at least six months.
  • Drivers 18 and older have a mandatory 30-day waiting period after obtaining a state permit.

Vehicle Requirements

  • Vehicle must be properly registered and insured.
  • Seats and seat belts are required for everyone in the vehicle.
  • Brakes, horn, mirrors, speedometer, wipers, exhaust system, and suspension must work properly.
  • Headlights, taillights, brake lights, and front and rear turn signals must work.
  • Tires, windshield, lug nuts, and overall vehicle condition must be safe for road testing.
  • The examiner must have safe access to the passenger side of the vehicle.

What requirements are there for my teen to complete a road test?

Teen drivers must complete Segments 1 and 2 of driver’s education, log 50 hours of driving experience including 10 hours at night, and hold a Level 1 license for a minimum of six months.

Do I need to bring my own vehicle?

Yes. West MI Road Testing does not supply vehicles for road testing. Your vehicle must be in proper working condition, properly registered, insured, and equipped with required safety features.

If I’m over 18, when can I take my road test?

Drivers 18 and older have a mandatory 30-day waiting period after obtaining a state permit before taking the road test.

How long does the road test take?

The road test usually takes less than an hour. It includes three parking maneuvers and an on-road driving portion.

What parking maneuvers are included?

The parking portion includes forward stop line, backing into a parking spot, and parallel parking.

What happens if I need to retest?

A failed road skills test retest is $45 if rescheduled within 30 days. A retest due to missing documents or faulty equipment is $20 if rescheduled within 30 days.
